Short CV Invited Speaker

Klaus-Dieter Rest is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Production and Logistics, University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, Austria. He began his academic career at the Vienna University of Economics and Business where he obtained a diploma in Business and Economics, in the specialist area of Management Science. Afterwards, Klaus-Dieter transitioned to the Institute of Production and Logistics. He worked in various research projects in the fields of humanitarian logistics, urban logistics, and supply chain management, often in combination with risk and disaster management. His research interests include the application of Operations Research methods (e.g., linear programming, meta- and matheuristics) to real-world problems. One particular area of interest was the optimized scheduling of home health care (HHC) nurses. In this context, he also wrote his dissertation on “Decision support for home health care services in urban regions”, for which he received the Peter Faller Award from the Austrian Society for Traffic and Transport Science.

From 2016 to 2022 he left the University to work as a senior developer at ingentus decision support KG, a spin-off of the Institute of Production and Logistics. There he was responsible for transforming the scientific results in the field of HHC into a commercially useable decision support tool. The developed web service was used by a major HHC service provider in Vienna for several years. He was also a project manager and responsible for the development of software solutions for resource planning and accounting for another large healthcare provider.

After a short break, which he spent backpacking in Asia, Klaus-Dieter returned to the Institute of Production and Logistics in 2023. For most of his career at the Institute of Production and Logistics he was also a lecturer, leading a logistics seminar group. In his spare time, he is a member of the volunteer fire department and has been involved in several disaster relief operations. For his service during a major flood, he was awarded the Medal of the Province of Lower Austria for Disaster Response.
