More than 1,200 organisations and companies with approximately 800,000 employees in Germany are directly involved in environmental, energy-related and geoscientific issues in the field of environmental, energy and georesource management (EMAS Register of the Association of German Chambers of Industry and Commerce, 2017). This picture is also reflected regionally around the Jena site. The authorities, research institutes and companies that shape the location include, for example, the Thuringian State Office for the Environment, Mining and Nature Conservation (TLUBN), the Landesentwicklungsgesellschaft Thüringen mbH, the Max Planck Institute for Biogeochemistry, the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research Halle/Leipzig, Jena-GEOS GmbH, ecoTech Umwelt-Messsysteme GmbH, WISMUT GmbH, WISUTEC Wismut Umwelttechnik GmbH, Ercosplan Umwelt Consulting GmbH, K+S Kali GmbH, FUGRO AG, GESO KG and numerous other regional companies such as Carl Zeiss Jena GmbH, SCHOTT AG, Stadtwerke Jena, TEAG Thüringer Energie AG, Siemens AG Erfurt branch, JENOPTIK AG and Analytik Jena AG. All of these companies are already closely connected to the FSU Jena or EAH Jena through research cooperations at various interfaces.

With the introduction of the degree programme, the two Jena universities are responding to the rapid development in the fields of environmental technology and climate protection, alternative energy use and sustainable resource management.

The broad education in the natural sciences coupled with a specialisation in areas of the geosciences, the teaching of environmental technology aspects as well as the promotion of interdisciplinary skills make you extremely attractive for professions with interdisciplinary issues.

You can be employed in a variety of research institutes or industrial companies, but also in public authorities. There is a steadily growing demand for suitably qualified graduates in all of the above-mentioned institutions. In addition, a doctorate is open to you at home and abroad, especially in the field of geosciences, biology and chemistry.
